Small Island by Andrea Levy just won the Whitbread prize tonight (they get £25,000! That’s $47,000!). This book has already won the Orange Prize as well. Of course the novel is not yet available here in the U.S. (due in April), but maybe a few prizes will encourage Picador to hurry up the production schedule.
It’s not available in the U.S. yet? How very odd. I wonder what the rationale for the delay is? I’ve got my copy sitting by my bedside. Mind you, Andrea was here in Toronto promoting her book in the fall at the International Festival of Authors. I got a chance to chat with Ms. Levy for a few minutes at the Festival; what an utterly charming, witty down-to-earth lady.

I think it was one of those, it came out in the UK first and then the 8 month delay situations. It’s on the schedule for April, but I am hoping all these awards will nudge them.
You make her sound great! Now I want to read the book even more.
