I find the cover despicable, and the book description even worse. I’m shocked that this is your “favorite book cover ever.” Sad.

This is so painful it’s actually funny. Or is it so funny it’s actually painful? I’m going to join the others and point out that there’s really nothing more to be said.

Chloe: Ever heard of Mystery Science Theater 3000? No? How about “so bad it’s funny”? No? Okay, go to the dictionary and look up “sarcasm”. That should help.

The cover is waaaaaaaay great, and I share everyone’s glee. But I recognized the author as one of my favorites when I was in middle school — he wrote the Tripods and The Prince in Waiting fantasy series, both of which are quite thrilling.

So maybe this doesn’t stink as much as it seems. Maybe.

This book is actually well written! Yes, it’s from the famous John Christopher, who wrote the Tripods series as well as “The Ragged Edge.” It’s a restrained little piece of Gothic horror, and nothing like the Nazi-exploitation piece the cover makes it out to be. While not Christopher’s best work, it’s certainly nothing for him to be ashamed of, and this is a definite case of not judging a book by its cover!
