My movie list

Yesterday I promised to post a list of my top 50 movies which I am about to do. These are merely movies that I like. I make no claims about the greatness of them (you will know what I am talking about when you see the list). So here they are:

North by Northwest
Blade Runner
Raising Arizona
The Big Lebowski
Donnie Darko
The French Connection
Taxi Driver
Silence of the Lambs
Star Trek: First Contact
The Manchurian Candidate
Rushmore
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Road Warrior
This is Spinal Tap
Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House
Conan the Barbarian
Evil Dead 1 & 2
Mrs. Miniver
The Quiet Man
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly
Rear WIndow
The Birds
Red Dawn
The Wild Bunch
Zelig
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Pianist
Unforgiven
Seven Samurai
Rashomon
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Star Wars trilogy (the originals–as if you have to ask)
Godfather I & II
The Magnificent Seven
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Groundhog Day
Secretary
Lost in Translation
Gosford Park
Short Cuts
The Killer
Nashville
In the Mood for Love
Excalibur
Dune
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Raise the Red Lantern
To Kill a Mockingbird
Blue Velvet

So there it is. I probably could think of more movies that I might like even more than some on this list. But I think this should suffice. As you can see, my taste goes all over the place. I left off some of the dumber movies I enjoy such as Red Sonja and the like.
Feel free to comment or suggest movies that you like that you think are better than the ones I’ve listed. And don’t hold back. Feel free to make fun. I know there are a few on there worth giggling about.

**Update: Someone pointed out that I had listed North by Northwest twice, so I added The Manchurian Candidate. I have already thought of a few movies I would add if I did this over: The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Spirited Away, The Andromeda Strain.

You’ve got NxNw in there twice… but I think it’s a fine list of films. Not my list, but a good list.

Rear Window is brilliant. Raise the Red Lantern is brilliant.Short Cuts blew my mind when I saw it. Unforgiven was great.

I never really saw the appeal of Lynch, I think the Lord of the Rings movies are overrated although still good, and I didn’t like Taxi Driver as much as I expected to.

    Ummm, yeah.

Overall, you’ve got a pretty darn good list. Of course, there are so many movies to name, it’s hard to limit the list to just 50. I’m glad you mentioned Mrs. Miniver; I always cry when I see that one. There are some other great Hitchcock films worth watching, I think: Rope, Frenzy and Spellbound I think are interesting. Zelig is brilliant, but don’t forget the delicate sweetness of Broadway Danny Rose. You didn’t mention A Clockwork Orange, which is Kubrick’s best, I think. Others worth mentioning: Next Stop Wonderland, Strictly Ballroom, Memento, Big Night, The Daytrippers, Citizen Kane, Alistar Sim’s Christmas Carol, Inherit the Wind, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, In The Heat of the Night, The Year of Living Dangerously, Death and the Maiden, The Third Man, Strangers on a Train and Equus to name a few.
